Pastor Staff Relations part 2
  1. List your dreams and your goals for your ministry and for your church

  2. List what you believe has to be done to accomplish these dreams.
  3. Establish a list of goals with dates assigned to each goal
  4. Write out a plan for each goal including an outline of things that must be done to reach that goal.
  5. Read your goal sheet every day and pray over each goal daily.

Now that you know where you want to go, who do you need to help you get there? This is where you staff comes in. Develop good staff relations. Never take staff relations for granted. Ensure good staff relations by teaching good staff habits.

  1. Share your dreams and goal sheet with your staff and help them understand where you are going and why.
  2. Share with them how they can help
  3. Review these goals each week with your staff, constantly keeping the dream before them.
  4. Help equip them with the skills necessary for them to successfully accomplish their part in reaching these goals
  5. Meet with each staff member separately at least once a month to discuss where you are going and how you are going to get there.
  6. Ask them for their ideas and plans for their area of responsibility in reaching your goals?
  7. Ask for their dreams and goals for their ministry.
  8. Do they have specific dreams and goals for their ministry and do they have a date for the completion of each goal?
  9. Be sure they have a plan and if not help they get one.
  10. Continually share your dream for their area of ministry. Make sure they know what you expect from them
  11. Be sure they are confident that they have a plan that they believe will work. Are there needs necessary for success that you can help supply.
  12. Spend personal time with each staff member each month, not less than once a quarter to fellowship, relax and discuss personal things such as family, personal growth, spiritual growth, personal Bible study and prayer time, fears and concerns, health problems of them or their family, financial needs, financial affairs, retirement, transportation, living quarters and last but definitely not least “are you happy”.
  13. Be interested enough to develop such a trust that you can get personal with each person on your ministerial staff, then GET PERSONAL.

Get to know the family. Make it a point to have you and your family with your staff member’s family on a regular basis. There definitely needs to be a one family to one family relationship with each staff member’s family. Plan activities that include everyone on your ministerial staff and their families.  It is important that staff members and their families get to know each other on a personal basis.  Fellowship among staff families is important in building a cohesive staff but there is a tremendous need for the pastor's family and individual staff member's family having a close relationship with each other and that takes time and involvement together.

Developing the talents and attitudes of each member of your staff and establishing good communication with them produces long term staff relationships and successful ministries. Remember good staff relations do not just happen. It takes time and personal interaction. In a marriage a husband and wife must spend a quantity of quality time together or the mirage will not work. A staff is no different! It takes time together both in quantity and quality. Only you, as the pastor, can make that happen.  Only you as the pastor can determine how iimportant good working staff relations is to your ministry.  Will it be worth your time and effort?

God bless you on your journey to developing a great staff with God given unity and purpose. It will be one of your greatest and most rewarding achievements of your ministry. There will be more to come in this area of leadership.  Currently we are focusing on Training Youth Leaders to be more effective in their ministry for Jesus.
